Grade 10 - Language Arts
AP English Language and Composition B (Credit: 0.50)In AP English Language and Composition, students investigate rhetoric and its impact on culture through analysis of notable fiction and nonfiction texts, from pamphlets to speeches to personal essays. The equivalent of an introductory college-level survey class, this course prepares students for the AP exam and for further study in communications, creative writing, journalism, literature, and composition.
Students explore a variety of textual forms, styles, and genres. By examining all texts through a rhetorical lens, students become skilled readers and analytical thinkers. Focusing specifically on language, purpose, and audience gives them a broad view of the effect of text and its cultural role. Students write expository and narrative texts to hone the effectiveness of their own use of language, and they develop varied, informed arguments through research. Throughout the course, students are evaluated with assessments specifically designed to prepare them for the content, form, and depth of the AP Exam.

Students will learn how to communicate effectively through email and instant messaging, as well as format specific types of business messages and workplace documents. The role of digital media, visuals, and graphics in workplace communication will be explored. The importance of professionalism, ethics, and other positive skills are also emphasized in the course. Additionally, guidance is provided to help students through the process of searching, applying, and interviewing for a job.

In English 10A, you will also study a variety of techniques to improve your reading comprehension, writing skills, and grammar and mechanics.
English 10 B - Semester 2 (Credit: 0.50) English is the study of the creation and analysis of literature written in the English
language. In English 10B you will explore characteristics of different genres of fiction,
such as realistic fiction, historical fiction, and science fiction, and analyze historical
context, theme, and genre in Franz Kafka’s novella The Metamorphosis. The second
unit covers many types of nonfiction writing, including memoirs, personal essays, public
essays, speeches, and narrative nonfiction. In the third unit, you will analyze traits and
genres of poetry. In addition, you will complete writing activities in which you will employ
analytical and persuasive skills. In English 10B, you will also study a variety of
techniques to improve your reading comprehension, writing skills, and grammar and
mechanics.
Florida English II A - Semester 1 (Credit: 0.50)English is the study, analysis, and creation of literature written in the English language.
In Florida English 2A, you will explore the different literary devices used in fiction, such

Throughout the course you will compose your own texts and brief analyses to demonstrate your learning.
Ohio English Language Arts II B (Credit: 0.50)English/Language Arts is the study of language through the interpretation and analysis of texts. You will use the techniques you discover in authentic texts to improve your own skills as an author. In Ohio English Language Arts II, Semester B, you will closely read classic, modern, and world literature to explore themes through characterization and the structure of literary texts, including Shakespeare. You will closely read seminal documents to understand how authors develop an effective argument. In the culminating unit, you will use all the skills you have learned in this course to write your own research paper from texts you select.
